For a Healthy You in 2012

Last week we looked at where you are on your journey to wellness, and provided you with simple guidelines to help you stay on track, and achieve your weight and wellness goals. We also spoke in part about ingredients in some of the smoothie recipes I have shared, and their various health benefits. This week we are going to continue looking at the natural ingredients that I use in my smoothies and exactly how they contribute to wellness.  I particularly want to talk to you about pineapple and ginger.  These are simple foods that I am sure you have all had at one point or another.

Health Benefits of Pineapple

This fruit is rich in enzymes and contains a group of sulfur that helps digestion; the presence of bromelain makes it a great anti-inflammatory fruit. Bromelain extract is found in both the fruit core and stems of pineapple; it is great in reducing swelling and inflammation in conditions like arthritis, gout, sore throat acute sinusitis and can even be use pre and post surgery, to help speeds up tissue repair also to control swelling. Additionally, one serving of the fruit contains 80% of the recommended daily dose of vitamin C! So not only does pineapple taste delicious, it can be used as a tool to heal the body, for best results use fresh or frozen pineapple.

Health Benefits of Ginger

For thousands of years, ginger has been available in many different forms fresh ginger root or dried ginger root; can also be prepared as a tea ginger, candy, ginger ale or as cooking spice. Ginger has been used as a medicine for the treatment of a wide range of ailments from diarrhea to arthritis.
