Staying Healthy This Winter!

As the cold weather settles in, staying healthy could not be easier. Practicing prevention is the cure. This year instead of anticipating, or simply waiting for the cold season to get here and catching the flu or seasonal cold, I am going to share some tips with you that will help you become proactive; and miss the flu or cold altogether.

Staying healthy can be a challenge if we do not take charge of our health, make necessary changes and be sure to stay ahead of the game.

Here are 7 practical tips to staying healthy

1- Strengthen your immune system

If a house has a weak foundation there is a possibility that it may collapse, the same is true for our body temple. Strengthening your immune system is very important; we have to work diligently to make sure we have a strong immune system. We can do that by nourishing ourselves, immune cells cannot function without proper nutrition. Add plenty green leafy vegetables to our diet.

2- Exercise daily

As little as fifteen minutes exercise can boost your immune system. Movement activates the body’s resistant, unlike the heart the lymphatic system does not have a pump; it needs to be activated with motion. The use of a trampoline is a strong immune enhancer. Any form of exercise will increase blood circulation and lymph fluid throughout the body; exercise helps the immune system to work more efficiently and get rid of viruses.

3- Protect yourself from germs

Keeping germs at bay is the best defense against colds and flu. Washing your hands often both top, bottom and under your nails is a good practice to keep all year long. After riding the elevators or using public transportation wash your hands as soon as you get home. At the workplace, when using the fridge and microwave or to turn off the bathroom faucet, and leave the restroom use paper to handle the faucet and doors. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth after handling things like keyboard, money, cell phone, car keys…, washing your hands will provide extra protection.

4- Get some rest

The body was design to last for a long time, however if we keep it running without rest, it will break down. A cold, flu or fever are only reminders for us to slow down; these are different ways that the body gives us an indication that we need to rest our system; and if we do not pay attention the body will simply shut down. Resting is important it will strengthen the immune system, and increase the body’s ability fight viruses. Try to get at least seven to eight hours sleep at night.

5- Drink a lot of water

The body is made of 70% water therefore it is essential to good health, furthermore water is a solvent it helps flush toxins out of the body and carries nutrients to our cells. Drink plenty water throughout the day to help regulate the body’s functions.

6- Avoid alcohol and sugar

 When you feel a cold coming on stay away from sugars and alcohol, they will impair the immune system.

7- Increase these to stay healthy

Add more of these to prevent cold and flu all year long;

·         increase intake of green tea

·         cod liver oil, for children Scott’s Emulsion

·         vitamin C  

·         consider getting some sunshine or ask your doctor about vitamin D

·         get fresh air
